Connecting to the Internet

We are happy to help you whether you are connecting to the Internet for the first time or setting up a new connection.

There are many companies providing "free" Internet access worldwide. This usually means that you pay only the phone charges, but check the small print carefully before you sign up.

Regular internet users might find it cheaper to pay a set fee (often monthly) in return for "unlimited" access. Choosing an ISP

If you prefer your own www name (sometimes referred to as a "domain name" or a "dot com"), we can help you through the necessary procedure.

Finding space for your website

Once your website design is complete, you will need to find space for it on the Internet.

Many of the companies providing Internet access (ISP's) provide generous amounts of free web space which should be more than sufficient for most users. This means that there should not be any additional set up costs whatsoever.

Check your ISP's  home page for details of the amount of web space you are entitled to use and how to use it.

You may prefer your own www name (sometimes referred to as a "domain name" or "dot com"). This usually requires payment of a recurring registration fee.

Please contact us if you need any help or advice.

Some benefits of having a website

A website can be a very effective way of communicating.

For organisations, having a website can greatly reduce the need to produce and distribute printed material and can help you to provide access to services, information and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

With the advent of connection to the Internet through a TV, games console or mobile phone, access to the Internet is becoming easier all the time - in homes, schools, libraries and at work. The number of new Internet users has grown rapidly over the last few years and the trend looks likely to continue.

All inclusive computer packages have made accessories like digital cameras, web cams and scanners much more widespread and new possibilities are opening up all the time.

It would be worth at least finding out more about how to get involved.

Some drawbacks of having a website

We are confident that we offer excellent value for money, but we recognise that cost is a major factor, especially for charities and voluntary groups. We encourage you to have a look at our free services first to see if they meet your needs.

If your website is available to the public and contains an e-mail address, you may wish to take steps to minimise unwelcome e-mails (known as SPAM or junk e-mail). We will gladly offer you free support by e-mail giving you a number of options to help you deal with this problem should it occur.

Children may need additional guidance and support when using the Internet. Various organisations offer advice. Childnet International is a children's Internet charity committed to helping to make the Internet a great and safe place for children. You can visit the Childnet International website at  http://www.childnet-int.org

Calculating the costs

First, check to see if any of our free services meet your needs.

Then, if you are considering asking us to design a website for you, use our pricing section to calculate the costs.

In the vast majority of cases, we can help you to take advantage of totally free web space (which many people have already) so there is no additional set up cost.

We will also help you to minimise ongoing and future costs. We would be very happy to update and maintain your site in the future. If you prefer to do this yourself, we will give you free help and advice by e-mail.

Free services

As part of our commitment to "not for profit" organisations, including charities, voluntary groups, schools and clubs, we are very happy to offer free no obligation advice and support by e-mail on any aspect of the Internet.

Our help section contains free easy to follow information to get you started. Please contact us for more detailed information and advice if you need it.

We are keen to encourage and support website projects (including where a group wants to produce its own free website) and hope this will be of particular interest to schools, youth clubs and community groups.

Working with your photos

We will treat the photographs you send us with great care and return them to you.

We will use the photos according to your instructions. Amongst other things, we can make the images larger or smaller, use one or more parts of a photo, combine several photos to produce a new image and repair damaged photos.  Photo ideas

The better the photos you send us, the better they will appear on your website.

If you have the images on your computer already, consider sending them to us as e-mail attachments. You can take advantage of an additional discount

Additional benefits for schools

All of our professional services are available to schools.

However, because of the particular importance of information technology on the school curriculum, we are keen to encourage and support website projects whether as part of the school timetable or an after school club.

We are happy to offer free advice and support where the school wants to produce its own website or to work in partnership with the school to produce a joint design.

Help for new small businesses

We appreciate the additional difficulties faced by new small businesses.

If your business has been trading for less than 12 months, we are happy to offer you a discount and to discuss deferred payment arrangements.
